Emirates News Agency – Ruler of Sharjah’s efforts in promoting Arabic language hailed at seminar in Mauritania

NOUAKCHOTT, 19th June, 2022 (WAM) — Academics and opinion leaders have hailed the efforts of His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, to support the promotion of the Arabic language, including the recent production of the Historical Dictionary of the Arabic Language.

This happened during a seminar organized by the Arabic Language Center in Mauritania here, during which the Mauritanian Minister of Culture, Youth, Sports and Relations, Khattari Ould Cheibani, and Dr. Mohammed Safi Al Mosteghanemi, secretary general of the Arabic Language Academy (ALA) in Sharjah, attended, along with a number of heads and representatives of Arab academies and scholars.

The seminar highlighted the achievements stemming from the completion of the Historical Dictionary of the Arabic Language and the tireless efforts made by ALA in association with its peers in other Arab countries to publish 17 volumes of the historical dictionary.

The Mauritanian minister expressed his country’s appreciation for Sharjah’s efforts under the leadership of Sheikh Dr. Sultan in promoting the Arabic language and supporting writers, scholars and poets.

The dictionary is the largest Arabic linguistic knowledge and information project that documents the history of Arabic language lexicons and their transformations of use over the past 17 centuries. It not only provides the history, origins, meanings and explanations of words, but also documents the history of the Arab nation, preserves its civilization and celebrates the achievements of the Arabs. It describes the words, the definition of the semantics of the words according to their historical contexts and their etymology.
